Первые упоминания о поселениях людей на территории Чивитавеккьи относятся к древнему городу Сентоселле, некогда богатому торговому центру, служившему портом для Этрурии. Плиний младший в своих писаниях ссылается на Сентоселле, как место мирового собрания, проведенного Траяном. Сентоселле позаимствовал свое название у стиля постройки деревенских домов, которые напоминали ульи с маленькими ячейками, а также у крошечных бухт, расположенных вдоль побережья, которые обеспечивали кораблям беспрепятственный проход. Благодаря защищенности Сентоселле и свободному доступу к морю, Траян построил в его окрестностях свою самую экстравагантную виллу, упомянутую Плинием. До наших дней сохранилась базисная структура порта, впервые спроектированная Траяном.
